Position: Senior Parks/Facilities Maintenance Worker (12497, Grade HL3)

Based in Olney Manor Recreational Park, the Montgomery County Department of Parks, Northern Parks Division, is looking for a Senior Parks/Facilities Maintenance Worker to support park maintenance programs in a 44‑park area covering 3,841 acres.
The Park and Facilities Maintenance Leader oversees a team that handles general maintenance tasks such as equipment operation, routine ground maintenance, playground repairs, trash removal, athletic field renovation, trail maintenance and tree work.
This position involves core activities: operating light automotive and motorized power equipment—trucks, tractors with attachments, large riding mowers, loaders, forklifts—and applying chemical pesticides. Days, nights and weekends are required.

Examples of Important Duties
• Operate riding mowers and tractors with attachments to maintain parks, ball fields, and brush.
• Operate trucks, non‑CDL truck and trailer combinations, non‑CDL trash trucks, front‑end loaders, backhoes, skid steers, non‑CDL dump trucks with snowplows and heavy equipment to remove snow, grade fields and other park areas.
• Haul materials and equipment.
• Perform routine safety inspection and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
• Occasionally perform custodial maintenance and repairs to park buildings and structures.
• Maintain athletic fields, including layout (measure, plot and square corners, plot yard lines, mark lines) and aerate, overseed and fertilize turf areas.
• Install amenities such as signs, grills, picnic tables, fences (chain‑link and split rail), basketball rims and nets.
• Perform tree maintenance duties, operate chain saws, chipping machine to grind brush into mulch.
• Operate stump grinder to remove tree stumps.
• Assist with transporting supplies and setting up special events.
• Provide general assistance to park visitors and assist with programs and events.
• Ability to communicate in another language is a plus.
• Perform stormwater facilities preventive maintenance per Department of Environmental Protection standards.
• Maintain bioretention and rain garden facilities with balanced vegetation free of weeds.
Important Skills and Characteristics
• Knowledge of work procedures, standard tasks and techniques for routine grounds maintenance, trail maintenance, landscaping, basic building maintenance, custodial work, safety procedures, cleaning agents, pesticides and fertilizers, and Commission organization policies and procedures* (typically acquired on‑the‑job).
• Skill to operate hand and power tools, chainsaws, power saws, wood chippers, push and riding mowers, small tractors with attachments, small trucks or vans with small trailers, computerized software programs, provide courteous service, and perform First Aid, CPR, AED.
• Problem‑solving ability to select, organize and logically process relevant information to solve a problem.
• Communication skill to understand verbal and written information and express it clearly—reading labels, writing routine reports and correspondence.
• Interpersonal skills to interact effectively and establish and maintain teamwork.
Working Conditions
• Primarily outdoors with occasional office work.
• Exposure to various elements, weather, chemicals, pesticides, wildlife and insects.
• Requires constant kneeling, bending, twisting, lifting; occasionally up to 100 pounds and usually up to 50 pounds.
• Essential employee must be on‑call 24 hours for emergencies.
• Must be available to work weekends and evenings as necessary.
